J2 from Captain in US 1/32 stationed MIKE 2:

  • US Units lacked manpower for dominance patrols;
  • Had not received significant contact on MIKE2;
  • No engagement with CIVPOP

J2 from I-COM (Capt Ellis to add details):

  • At least three individuals using radio comms identified by name;
  • Stated hostile intent towards ISAF forces;
  • One individual present in immediate vicinity MALCHIFAZAR during convoy move;
  • Chatter immediately prior to ambush stated 'they are below us'.

A/2: please report details and location of RPG find.

A/1, 4/1: Brief ARR of convoy ambush required - where was IED concealed? Where was enemy firing point?

Weapons cache consisting of 2x RPG-7 launchers and 5 rounds discovered in the vicinity GRID 1741:0636.  There was an unconfirmed report of an IED in the area of the cache.  Will update after debriefing 2/3.

CIVPOP in MACHIFAZAR are currently unfriendly.  Unsure if this was due to US occupation of MIKE-2 or towards all ISAF elements.  Several MAM's were seen carrying Lee-Enfield SMLE style longarms.

One vehicle seen in MACHIFAZAR. 1x Blue medium truck described as a URAL.

One believed dicker was observed in the area of MACHIFAZAR.  Decribed as wearing all white clothing, he was seen several times observing our movements.  No binos or comms were seen on him.  He was ID'd as a dicker, rather than a nosey neighbour, due to his use of cover.  Last observed at last light, prone in cover,  at GRID 1718:0598

Two of the village elders from Machifazar have approached the gatehouse at Mike 2.

They seemed unhappy - they felt safe with the Americans on the hill because they were generally left to go about their business, but aren't sure what to think of the Brits.

They were particularly upset that within an hour of arrival, troops began digging up the only road leading into the village. The town relies heavily on trade, and the road is the only way to get trucks in.

There was also some concern that one of the soldiers said the British would not allow anyone to leave the village.

  • 4/1 served as the lead element in the leading vanguard element.
  • 172 .50cal rounds were discharged. No GPMG. No casualties taken
  • Convoy was halted approximately 4 times to clear for suspected IED's.
  • 4/1 is currently posted at MIKE 2

Points of Note

A single IED was detonated in the presence the convoy 1/2KM North of MIKE 2 on MSR GOLD.

The detonation occurred when the centre of the convoy containing the soft skinned vehicles was passing its position. Two points are to be noted from this

  1. The IED must of been detonated by a command wire or remotely by some other device. A pressure plate device would of most likely been detonated by my own vehicle and definitely by the other 4-5 vehicles who passed it after. It is clear as stated in I-COM chatter that the insurgents were targeting our supplies.
  2. The IED was passed by several vehicles without being spotted. This would entail that the person(s) who placed the IED felt they had sufficient time and concealment to either dig the IED in to the road or search for sufficient natural cover to hide the IED. That portion of the road is in a dead-spot from MIKE 2, and should be considered uncleared of IED's unless it is under constant surveillance.

The convoy was engaged by small arms fire approx 1/2KM North of MIKE 2 as it continued its travel to KINNO on MSR GOLD.

The insurgents engaged from a large wooded area at the crest of a hill approx 700-800 meters to the SE of MIKE 2 using the detonation of an IED as a contact initiate. The contact lasted for 3 minutes and no casualties we taken in 4/1. It should be noted that during the disembarkation of troops to MIKE 2 that a large plume of black smoke was observed coming from that same area. This could of been the N/D of insurgent ordnance or a primitive form of signalling to other insurgents in the region that we had arrived at MIKE 2. This would also confirm that MIKE 2 and its surrounding area is under surveillance by insurgent forces.

During the return to MIKE 2, 4/1's vehicle was pursued by 1x Camo Hilux.

After several verbal commands to stay back, the vehicle continued to close the gap between itself and my vehicle. Not having any communications ability with 0A and the level of threat to my vehicle increasing, I authorised Pte Vella to fire 1x .50 round into the hillside adjacent to the pursuant vehicle as a warning. The occupant immediately stopped his vehicle and dismounted. As we increased the gap between us once again, the car resumed its pursuit of our vehicle though at a much increased range.

Initial contact with locals in SPETZYAHIR was hostile.  One individual was very agitated.

During the patrol, one individual named NADIR approached us and told of the villagers dislike of the Takiban.  He also stated that the main enemy force operated from LOLOSALAM.  He also gave the location of an OP at GRID 136:089.  When asked if the villagers required aid he asked for water.

Water was brought from KINNO and distributed.

After distributing the water another local, named NAID HUSSEIN, approached and repeated the villagers dislike of the Takiban.  He stated that the Takiban were bragging about bring down a heli.  He did not know how they intended to do it.  He also spoke of a weapons cache in GRID: 147:075

Weapons Cache GRID 147:075.  This was investigated by 2/2 and 2/3.  It was found to be guarded by 3 Armed PAX who were engaged and eliminated.  A further 3 Armed PAX were engaged and driven off by 2/3.  A search of the bodies revealed 1x AK47, 1x AKSU and 1x RPK.  All had 343 type radios.  One was carrying a medic backpack.  The cache consisted of destroyed Russian vehicles.  Two IEDs were discovered on the position and left in place.

An OP position at GRID 139:075 was discovered by 2/3.  This was unoccupied but 1x binoculars and 2x radios were recovered.

2/1 carried out a dominance patrol through the hills WEST of SPETZYAHIR.  Nothing found.

2/2 carried out a dominance patrol through the valley SOUTH-WEST of SPETZYAHIR.  Nothing found.

Only casualty was p4 caused by sniper fire. The sniper position was indentified as GRID 131:075 and was engaged by rotary.

HUMINT via SIS via WHO, has Mir-sayb as the local tribal headman for the village and Mullah Omar as the local spiritual leader.  The courtyard outside the Mullahs home is the local mosque.
